Far from the Madding Crowd (Thomas Hardy book)

I didn’t enjoy this book very much. My main complaint is that Hardy seemingly had never heard the advice to “show, don’t tell.” None of the characters really came alive for me, and I found several of them to be more annoying than anything—Bathsheba and Boldwood in particular. Sergeant Troy was the most entertaining to read about, but I can’t say I cared about him. Gabriel Oak is likable, but he didn’t exercise enough agency to be interesting.

And, my goodness, the misogyny was nonstop. At times it seemed like on every other page there was a sentence or two making degrading generalizations about women.
