Homage to Catalonia (George Orwell book)

Published 2022-02-23.

George Orwell wrote this book about his service in the Spanish Civil War a few months after he returned from it. It’s partly a war memoir, with descriptions of life in the trenches, and it’s partly a work of journalism that describes in quite a bit detail all the political goings-on in Barcelona at the time. It’s written largely for a contemporary audience, so parts of it were a bit lost on me, especially since I didn’t know anything about the Spanish Civil War before reading it. But it was fascinating to hear Orwell’s first-hand account of what it was like to fight in a war at that time.
